Born in Yerevan in 1956. Graduated with honors from the Yerevan State Medical Institute in 1979, then trained in vascular surgery at the Bakulev Institute in Moscow and in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Yale.

He was a resident at the Yerevan branch of the All-Soviet Union Scientific Center of Surgery, Department of General Surgery, from 1979 to 1981, and then at the Moscow Cardiovascular Surgery Institute named after A. V. Bakulev from 1981 to 1984, specializing in vascular surgery under academician A. V. Pokrovsky, whom he considers his teacher. In 1984 he defended his PhD dissertation on renoportal venous anastomosis with contralateral adrenalectomy in the treatment of severe hypertension.

From 1985 to 1990 he worked in the vascular department of the Yerevan branch of the All-Soviet Union Scientific Center of Surgery, finishing as senior scientific surgeon. In 1990–1991 he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Yale University, New Haven, CT, training under Prof. S. Aryan, Z. Chicarelli, R. Stahl and others.

He returned to Armenia in 1992. Since then he has been chief of the plastic and vascular surgery departments at several Yerevan medical establishments and associate professor at Yerevan State Medical University. Since 2011 he has been the director of the Vik-Med private clinic.

In head and neck tumours the difficulty lies not only in removing the tumour, but in the immediate reconstruction of the defect.

  • Surgical treatment of vascular malformations — extensive and in some cases unique experience
  • Operations on tendons, peripheral nerves and the venous system
